Umbra et Imago (latin for "Shadow and Image") was formed in autumn 1991. Until 1994 (first 2 albums and 1 minialbum) the band 's music was Dark Wave with Electronic elements. In 1995, the style changed towards Gothic Metal and "Neue Deutsche Härte". The band's philosophy was picking up Sigmund Freud's idea, that sexuality is the center of our being. Thus, they transported sadomasochistic sexual fantasies via their songs. The band is famous for incorporating BDSM acts and complex pyrotechnics in their live shows.
