Three silent films from the 1910s in which people slip out of the gender they were assigned, by eating seeds, putting on trousers, or simply refusing to behave like they were told to. Curated by filmmaker and cultural organiser Antony Voronov, a Russian gender queer refugee from a country where these films now fall under extremism law. She takes one, grows a moustache, starts courting women and hands a seed to her maid. A comedy from a decade before hormones, working out what a body might do if it could be chosen. Ich möchte kein Mann sein (I Don’t Want to Be a Man)Ernst Lubitsch, 1918, Germany, 45 minutes, silent with German intertitles and English subtitlesOssi is tired of being told how a young woman behaves, so she has a suit made and goes out into Berlin as a man. She ends up drunk in a nightclub with her own guardian, who does not recognise her and kisses her anyway.
