Mythical creatures, gamelan-tinged hardcore beats: Garin Nugroho’s Samsara turns a Balinese folktale into an otherworldly silent cine-concert. In 1930s Bali, lower-class Darta falls for Sinta, but her family rejects him. Desperate, he meets a shaman offering a Faustian deal: sacrifice his future child for wealth. Drawing on German expressionism and wayang kulit, the film’s soundtrack by Wayan Sudirana and Gabber Modus Operandi fuses industrial noise with tradition. Not live this time, but it will feel like it.
